Retreat Theme
If you take 1 step towards Me, I’ll take 100 towards you
The Lord rushes toward the devotee faster than the devotee rushes toward Him. If you take one step toward Him, He takes a hundred steps toward you! He will be more than a mother or father. He will foster you from within you, just as He has saved and fostered so many saints who have placed faith in Him.

Dr. Surendra Upadhyay is well known in the Sai family as a pioneer of International Medical Camps of the Sathya Sai Global Council, UK, and as a Member of the International Medical Committee. Dr. Surendra Upadhyay is an ophthalmologist and since 1985 has been coordinating Sai Medical Camps and health awareness seminars all over the world.
Dr. Upadhyay is an Honorary Visiting Professor, D.A University, Indore, and Consultant Ophthalmologist, UCL, London. He has organized and led free eye treatment camps in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Russia, Bosnia, Zambia, and Kenya and in South America. He had the honor and privilege of working closely with our beloved Sri Sathya Sai Baba and with Mother Teresa.
In his volunteer medical service, Dr. Upadhyay says that he experiences “Service to man is service to God.” He has elaborated on the meaning of sacrifice as described by Sri Sathya Sai Baba, is to love and serve those in need, without any personal reservations or expectations, to the best of one’s capacity. At the 2017 Sai International Medical Conference, he was one of fourteen healthcare professionals and two volunteers, recognized for their outstanding contributions and long-term dedication to Sathya Sai Global Health Mission and the practice of Sathya Sai Ideal Healthcare.

Dr. Indumathie Thanasingam Kolluru, originally from Sri Lanka, was personally chosen by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba to join His institution for the 11th grade. She is an alumna of the Anantapur campus, where she had the divine fortune of spending seven sacred years—from intermediate through post-graduation.
A Doctor of Holistic Medicine and a certified Health and Life Coach (USA), she was blessed to serve in Swami’s Healthcare Mission for nearly three decades. Under Swami’s direct guidance, she joined the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences (SSSIHMS), Prasanthigram, at its inception, and lovingly led the Dietary Department as its Head until 2017.
Prasanthi Nilayam has been her spiritual home, where she was divinely blessed with a residence within the ashram. She now resides in Dallas, Texas, with her husband.

In 1976, a simple photograph of Sri Sathya Sai Baba found its way into Brother Arnel’s life, placed lovingly on his family altar by his father. This marked the beginning of a profound journey, a love story with the Divine that would unfold over the years. Born in Toronto, Canada, and now residing in Trinidad & Tobago, Brother Arnel’s path was gently guided by Swami’s grace.
After the untimely loss of his mother in 1985, he joined the Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School, a decision that set the foundation for his spiritual and academic growth. Under Swami’s blessings, he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce from the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning and later a Global Executive MBA from Bocconi University in Milan. His love for bhajans led him to be part of the Prashanti and Brindavan groups, fulfilling his childhood dream of singing in Swami’s presence in Kodaikanal. Today, as a HealthTech director, Brother Arnel carries Swami’s teachings in his heart, living a life of purpose and devotion.

Continuing his academic pursuits, in June 2014, Ananth began his MSc in Mathematics at the Prasanthi Nilayam (PSN) campus. After completing his MSc, he contributed as a full-time faculty member, teaching Mathematics to undergraduate students at the Brindavan Campus for nearly a year. In 2017, he returned to Prasanthi Nilayam to embark on a PhD in Mathematics, balancing part-time teaching with his research. During this time, he also served as a wing teacher and mentor for undergraduate students in the hostel. In 2022, Anand was awarded a PhD in Mathematics and subsequently traveled to the USA to pursue postdoctoral research in Mathematical and Computational Neuroscience. He is currently conducting research at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.
In addition to his academic and professional accomplishments, Ananth has had a profound spiritual journey. In 2010, while in the 12th grade, he joined the Prasanthi Mandir bhajan group under the direct guidance of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba and have been singing in the Divine presence since then. He has also been blessed with the opportunity to offer Harikatha and Burrakatha programs at Bhagawan’s lotus feet.

Bro. Sai Chandra Bhanu was born and raised in Hyderabad, India. He has studied in swami’s institutions all his life. He was blessed to study in higher secondary school in Prasanthi Nilayam, graduation and post-graduation studies in SSSIHL in Brindavan and Prasanthi Nilayam between 1997-2007. He was fondly called as ‘Prasadam Boy’ by Swami and by many other revered elders as he used to lead the Prasdam distribution inside the mandir for almost 5 years. He finished his double post-graduation in Economics as his final lap. He then spent 2007 to 2010 in Shivam, Hyderabad and served swami in various capacities doing many village activities, medical camps, and water plant implementations. After living and working in Hyderabad between 2007-2010, he moved to London, UK in 2011. He has worked in marketing departments of several FMCG companies in the UK during 2011 and 2022. He has also served as service coordinator for Slough Sai Centre in West London. In Jan 2023, he and his wife moved to Parsippany, New Jersey as his company moved me on a new role in its consumer division. He has lead consumer market insights function for dishwasher detergent brand called ‘Finish’ and other household brands such as Resolve, Woolite, Airwick etc. owned by a global FMCG company called Reckitt Benckiser.

List of Service Opportunities
Audio System Support
This group takes care of the Audio system requirements during the retreat. They help transport, setup and monitor sound systems in Devotion Hall, SSE programs, Young Adults meeting room and workshop venues.
Site Setup
Committed volunteers are needed to transform the campsite into an atmosphere where all can enjoy an uplifting, spiritual experience. This is done on Friday. Setup needs to be completed prior to our first bhajan session on Friday evening. A large number of volunteers are needed in the devotion hall to help with setting up of the altar, decorations and seating arrangements. Volunteers are also needed to help place signs and banners throughout the campsite for easy navigation. Assistance is needed in transferring groceries / supplies to the kitchen area and in setting up the dining hall.
Site Cleanup
We all want to leave the camp and head home as soon as possible but our goal is to leave the site in a better condition than when we arrived. If you can stay back and help with the camp cleanup, it would be greatly appreciated. Please note that this is a much needed service. We are very grateful to those who assist in our retreat’s closing activities.
Devotion Hall Maintenance
Maintenance of the devotion hall, including ushering of devotees, preparing for programs/workshops, etc.
Dining Hall
This service involves setting up and keeping the dining area clean and lovingly serving all devotees. Please note that this seva does not involve cooking. Do not check off this service if you are participating in cooking a meal with your center at the same time.

Medical Clinic (On call doctors and support staff)

Sanitation
These volunteers keep an eye on the rest rooms and other areas. Supplies and other resources will be provided.
Service Desk
These volunteers will be at the service desk which forms the central point of contact for devotees for all their needs. Service desk functions include matching attendees to the service activities they have committed to, serving as lost and found, disseminating messages, managing emergencies, dispatching external transportation where needed, etc. They will ensure that problems with cabins are dealt with appropriately. They will have directions and information about nearest hospitals, hotels, bus stations, supermarkets, and other facilities.
Shoe Service
In the devotion hall, help is needed in arranging and maintaining the shoes in an orderly fashion.

Transportation (External)
This group takes care of rides to/from the nearest bus station, airport etc.
Videography
This is an aspect where memories created are kept for a many years after the event. This will be a major service to all the devotees who are unable to attend the retreat or who were providing valuable seva in the areas identified in this section. Retreat videos are posted on the regional website. If you have camcorders/video equipment and are good at using them, then please consider signing up for this seva.
God will not ask you, when and where you rendered service? He will ask with what motive you did it. You may boast about the quantity, but God seeks quality, the quality of the heart, the purity of the mind, the nobility of the motive. The Lord is pleased only when you do the things He desires. How else can you win His grace, but by nursing and nourishing His children.
— March 19, 2008 Thought for the Day
Smaller and interactive study circle style workshops are planned based on the retreat theme and covering areas of devotion, education and service.
Please click “WORKSHOP SCHEDULE” button above for the details.
Accommodations
Campsite accommodation is very limited and retreat participants are encouraged to register early to ensure overnight accommodation.
Campsite accommodations are in cabins with lower and upper bunk beds for 8 to 16 people. Men and women stay in separate cabins. Young boys under age 6 can stay with their mother, however boys 6 and over will need to stay with father or a male guardian. Its recommended that children and young adults occupy upper bunks to allow elderly and adults to occupy lower bunks. You will also need to bring your own bedding (sleeping bags or bed sheets, pillows, blankets etc.).
Families preferring to stay together or with special health or other requirements may want to make reservations at hotels nearby.
The cabins are not heated. Nights at retreat camp site can get cold. We recommend that you bring a few personal items to ensure that your stay at the retreat is comfortable and safe. Items should include warm clothing, coat, raingear, walking shoes, towel, toiletry including hand soap, flashlight, alarm clock, insect repellent, cushion, pen, notebook and water bottle.
Offsite accommodations
Devotees who choose to stay offsite are responsible for making their own arrangements. During Memorial Day hotel room availability is at a premium. Please call early to ensure accommodation during this busy vacation weekend. The following is a partial list of hotels close to the retreat site:
